PROPANE SAFETY

  • What should I do if I smell gas?

Propane is odorized with an added chemical to provide a early warning sign of a  leak. The smell is a stinky, sulfur-like odor, sometimes described as the smell of rotten eggs or a dead animal. The odor is designed to be distinct and more unpleasant than any appliance exhaust that you might smell around your home from time to time.

If you do smell that strong telltale rotten scent, here’s what you should do:

    - Leave the area immediately and get everyone out of the building.

    - Shut off the gas. If it's safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank. Turn the valve clockwise - to the right - to close it.

    - Report the leak. Call (508)229-0725 and 9-1-1.

    - Don’t return to the building or area until the authorities tell you it's safe.

    - Get your system checked. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, make sure that a professional check your entire system to ensure it’s free of leaks.

  • What should I do if my Carbon Monoxide detector is sounding?

If your Carbon Monoxide detector is sounding off, don’t ignore it! Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas produced by burning gasoline, wood, propane, charcoal or other fuel. Improperly ventilated appliances may allow carbon monoxide to accumulate to dangerous levels. Prolonged exposure can cause brain damage and death.

For your safety, if a Carbon Monoxide detector is sounding off follow these steps.

    - Turn off appliances, or any sources of combustion you can quickly find.

    - Get outside to fresh air. If you can’t leave the building for some reason, open as many windows and doors as possible to get fresh air into the space.

    - Call for help. Call 9-1-1 before calling us at (508) 228-0725. If you call us before calling the Fire Department, we will call the Fire Department

    - If anyone is experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: headaches, dizziness, vomiting, after calling 9-1-1 move them to a location that has fresh air.

    - Don’t return to the building or area until the authorities tell you it's safe.

    - Get your system checked. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, make sure that a professional check your entire system to ensure they are burning and vented properly.

PROPANE DELIVERIES

  • How do I place an order for a propane a delivery?

Place an order for propane by calling (508) 228-0725.

Automatic Delivery customers should only need to call if something is out of ordinary i.e. additional guests in the house, change of tenants, increased pool or spa usage.

Will Call customers monitor their usage by reading a gauge on the tank. Deliveries should be requesting a delivery by a phone call to (508) 228-0725 when the gauge on the tank reads between 20% and 30%.

If you are not already a Yates Island Gas customer, we will need a few key details before we can schedule a delivery. Fill out our New Customer Form and give us a call at (508) 228-0725 to get started.

  • When should I schedule my Will Call delivery?

Will Call deliveries should be requested by a phone call to (508) 228-0725 when the gauge reads between 20% and 30%. A same-day delivery fee will apply if a low tank percentage or run out requires an emergency delivery. Emergency propane deliveries can be made after-hours, on weekends, and on holidays should you need it.

Customers who require or request and Emergency Delivery will incur a Delivery Fee of $75

  • I just received a delivery, but my tank is not 100 percent full. Why?

Because propane expands as the temperature warms, Yates Island Gas only fills propane tanks to 80 percent capacity. This is standard practice in the propane industry.

  • How is my automatic delivery schedule determined?

When you sign up for Automatic Delivery, Yates Island Gas estimates your propane usage using our advanced computer system and your usage history. Deliveries are scheduled when the system indicates you need a refill. This method is very accurate with consistent usage, though it is recommended that you monitor the level of your tank during unusually cold temperatures or if there are changes in your normal usage. (i.e. additional guests in the house, change of tenants, increased pool or spa usage).

  • Can I request a call from my driver before he makes a delivery?

The law, including the restrictions on Commercial Driver Licenses, regulate the use of mobile phones and other electronics by motorists. For the safety of our drivers and other motorists on the road, we do not allow the use of electronics while making deliveries.

TANK & EQUIPMENT

  • How do I read my tank gauge?

The tank gauge is located under or inside the dome on your propane tank. On Above Ground tanks it is located at the top of the tank, on Underground tanks it is directly under the lid of the tank. The gauge shows a range of numbers that indicate the total amount of propane in the tank as the percent of the tank’s capacity.

Because propane expands in the presence of heat, we’ll only fill your tank to 80 percent of its water capacity. So when the needle on the gauge points to 80, your tank is full. When the needle on the gauge points to 40, your tank is half full.

If you’re an Automatic Delivery customer, and the needle on your gauge is pointing to something below 30, give us a call at (508) 228-0725 and check to be sure we have you scheduled for a delivery soon.

  • How do I locate my underground tank?

Sometimes underground tanks can be hard to locate as the only part of the tank visible might be the tank’s dome cover. Dome covers are usually round and made of black plastic or steel. Some dome covers are rectangle and made of green plastic and sometimes a tank can be in a driveway under heavy man-hole covers.

In the winter, tanks are often marked with a stake to be located in the event of snow.

If you cannot find your underground tank, feel free to give us a call at (508) 228-0725 and ask if we have any notes on the account to help locate the tank.

  • How do I turn my propane On/Off at the tank?

The tank shut off valve is located under or inside the dome on your propane tank. On Above Ground tanks it is located at the top of the tank, on Underground tanks it is directly under the lid of the tank. Turn the valve hand wheel to the right, clockwise, to shut the valve and turn off the propane supply. Turn the valve hand wheel to the left, counterclockwise, to open the valve and turn on the propane supply.

SERVICE

  • I have no heat or no hot water, am I out of gas or do I have a non-working appliance?

If you have no heat or no hot water, you may not be out of propane, but may have a non-working gas appliance. There are a few steps you can take to get your system up and running faster by helping us determine if you need visit from a Delivery Truck or a Service Technician.

First, if you know where your tank is, check the tank gauge. If the needle on the gauge points to anything higher than 5, you have propane and you need a visit from a Service Technician.

Secondly, check other propane appliances. If you have a propane range, check to see if the burners fire. If they do, you have propane, and you need a visit from a Service Technician.

If no other propane appliances are working, and the tank gauge is reading less than 5, you are out of propane and you need a visit from a Delivery Truck.
